Read Across America Day

...and we really did!

We partnered with Kennedy Elementary in Roxbury, New Jersey and truly read across America on this special day. We carved out a part of our day to Skype a group of second graders halfway across the country to share our love for reading. 

Mrs. Simoneau, Mrs. Horton, our icoach, and the three second grade classes wait patiently for the Skype call to come in.

Our own author and storyteller, Mrs. Simoneau shares her book, Wash Creek with students in New Jersey via Skype.

The picture is dark...but I love seeing the second grade teacher from New Jersey on the screen...peeking in on us!  She's wearing her hat of Green Eggs and Ham in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday, which was also March 2nd.

...and so do the students halfway across America!

Despite the one hour time difference, students are engaged in the same book, on the same day, at the same time...in two different states!

We even took time to share with our faraway friends.  We shared our favorite things about living in Kansas.  They shared their favorite things about living in New Jersey!  We even got to peek in on a former friend and classmate from Elmont during our kindergarten year.  Remember Natalia Yamka?  She's part of the group we're skyping!

Students on both sides listened attentively...

What's a book without some good storytelling mixed in?

We said goodbye for now...but hope to make this happen again!  Such excitement to truly take part in Reading Across America!  A SPECIAL THANKS to Mrs. Simoneau for coordinating this special event and to Mrs. Horton for assisting with the technology piece of this day!
