Expanding Our Math Vocabulary
(Oh, yes...and by the way, it's 'Hats On Day' today.)
We are learning about Data Collection and the following math words about organizing data:
minimum, maximum, range, median, mode.
Just ask us anything about these words, we'd love to tell you what we know!
We used all kinds of different playing cards to set up our data.
(This is so easy to practice at home because almost every house has some cards laying around somewhere...)
Most importantly, we had to order our data first from the minimum to the maximum, or least to greatest.
To find the range of our data, we subtracted the low number from our high number.
 |
| Then we searched for the median of our data set. It's the middle number that is left when crossing our highs and lows. (Say hello to our Watchdog Dad back there, Mr. McClain. We love it when they jump in and help us out!) |

 |
| Finally, we found the mode of our data collection. It's the number that appears the most often. We say MOde because it reminds us that it means MOst. Ask your kiddo to demonstrate for you. :) |
 |
| Reese is working hard to record her findings. |
 |
| We had to remember to shuffle up our cards every time so the next friend would remember that the first step in collecting data is to organize it in sequence. (Nice hat, Ainsley! Go KC!) |
We used all kinds of fun cards...Phase Ten, UNO, Hello Kitty, Duck Dynasty, Playing Cards, and our Everyday Math Cards.
Encourage your child to hunt down some cards at home and show off their skills! So many of these words are brand new to us as second graders so we need lots of practice in hearing them, saying them, and applying them to our content.
