Measurement Olympics

Measurement Olympics
We incorporated measurement into six Olympic events in our classroom.  Teams moved through each event estimating, completing an activity, measuring the results, and recording awarded points.  Check these photos our of our second grade Olympic athletes in the following events:  Right Handed Marble Grab, Left Handed Link Lift, Smelly Sock Squeeze, Free Standing Jump, Raindrop Penny, and the Cotton Ball Blow.
How many  drops of water will a penny hold before it spills over the edge?  If you haven't tried it...you might be surprised!

The marbles are ready to be grabbed for the Right Handed Marble Grab.
Gavin measures the distance his cotton ball sailed in the Cotton Ball Blow.

Ella gets her straw ready to send her cotton ball soaring.

Jorja gets ready at the starting line.
Jackson measures in milliliters the amount of water he squeezed out of a black sock.  Eww!

We recorded our estimates and our actual measurements.  Points were awarded based on how close the difference was.

Careful to get everything recorded before the team moved into the next event.
Teams worked together to support, encourage, and celebrate.
